Philanthropic Focus on STEM Education

STEM Education

Originally founded as a research and development arm of Syracuse University, SRC is chartered as a not-for-profit organization. Our commitment to education, particularly in the science, technology, engineering, and math fields, extends beyond our core business. We believe that STEM education is vital to the future of our company, community, and country; and are proud to support a number of initiatives to build a strong pipeline of American students capable of tackling our nationís future challenges.

Corporate Campus Academic Mentoring Program
In 2011, SRC created the Corporate Campus Academic Mentoring Program with the Syracuse City School District. Through this program, middle school students are bussed to SRC’s campus to be mentored by our employees. The program is focused on helping students with math homework and the unique format allows more volunteers to become involved since they don’t have to travel offsite. The program also allows students the opportunity to leave their traditional school setting and perhaps see a future for themselves they previously had not considered.

SRC has witnessed the effectiveness of CCAMP and is looking to expand the program to other schools by partnering with other companies. In 2012, Lockheed Martin started their first CCAMP class, and in 2013, O’Brien & Gere joined the program. We encourage other companies to join us as a CCAMP Corporate Partner; watch this video to learn more.

CNY Technology Sector Champion
In 2013, SRC worked with Partners for Education & Business to create the CNY Technology Sector — a business-led effort that focuses on improving STEM education and technical workforce development. Through the CNY Technology Sector, more than a dozen local business and education leaders collaborate to expand STEM programming, improve partnerships in schools, and streamline efforts in CNY to build a strong, educated pipeline of future employees. We helped develop and launch the website, www.cnystem.com, to be the central point of information for students, parents, educators and businesses to learn about STEM related programs and opportunities, such as:

  • STEM Career Nights
Various events througout the year to learn about STEM careers in CNY
  • STEM Grants
Groups can apply for $100-$500 grants to be used for activities like the robotics club, Lego club, Science Olympiad, math league, etc. Visit www.cnystem.com/grants for more information.

LCS-SRC Engineering Ambassadors
The LCS-SRC Engineering Ambassadors program is completing its 10th semester of providing engaging engineering, science and technology programming. Under the direction of the Syracuse University Shaw Center and with funding from SRC, the program brings L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science students together with sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade students in the Syracuse City School District for afterschool STEM activities.

During the program’s Friday afternoon workshops, LCS students serve as role models, leaders, and friends to the students while facilitating hands-on science activities. The activities are designed to increase middle school student interest in STEM fields, as well as promoting healthy relationships with adult role models. The program’s mission is to spark a lasting passion for STEM education early in the lives of these students, with the ultimate goal of encouraging them to pursue those interests into high school and college.
